The information needs of today’s business environment and the promise of more efficient and timely service delivery with the use of e-commerce tools and web-based applications have made the enterprise network an essential backbone of the business processes of most organizations.

Network types and complexities have grown alongside the demands of business processes to offer continuous and ever – improving value to their clients, resulting also in an increasing level of exposure to risks and possible loss of assets which can impact negatively on the organization.

A proper understanding of network security issues in the context of risk –based management will help business leadership to provide reasonable assurance of the safety of business assets as well as comply with the regulatory requirements that abound to protect business and customers.

Our experience has shown that most audits of the Information Systems of organizations do not effectively cover the network and its elements, and when this is done , it is basically by way of obtaining an assurance from the IS department that the network and the information it carries are safe.

The main objective of this course therefore is to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and attitude that they require to adequately, objectively and independently audit the enterprise network.

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

• identify the elements of a network (workstation, servers, switches, routers etc)
• identify different network topologies ( ring, star, bus etc)
• differentiate LANs and WANs
• understand different LAN and WAN technologies in use today
• differentiate Wired and Wireless networks
• read and understand a network diagram
• identify network attacks
• identify vulnerabilities associated with networks
• identify the network perimeter
• identify perimeter protection devices( firewalls, IDS, IPS etc)

• evaluate the effectiveness of perimeter protection devices
• understand encryption and its use in network communication
• understand network access control mechanisms
• understand remote access mechanisms and associated risks
• identify measures for mitigating remote access risks
• evaluate the effectiveness of network access control mechanisms
• evaluate network performance metrics
• determine the adequacy of physical and environmental controls
• evaluate compliance with the requirements of organizational security policy and regulatory controls.

LAPTOP REQUIRED: A laptop is required for the training. This is to afford the participant the opportunity of actually simulating actual network audits on there own laptops and our network from within a VMware virtualized environment.

Laptop specification: We recommend a laptop with a minimum of 512 MB RAM (1 GB preferable) with Windows XP, Windows server 2003 or Windows Vista

A trial version of VMware workstation software will be provided for the participants that don’t already have it.

Network Security and audit tools will also be provided.
