The operational risk requirements of Basel II place a heavy emphasis on the identification, assessment, monitoring and control of operational risk. The ultimate requirements for reserving capital against operational losses are closely linked to the actions that a bank needs to take to manage these risks.
Operational risk are present whether the business is regulated or deregulated, centralized or decentralized, procedural or free rein and most times tends to overlap with market risk and credit risk. The exploitation of this exposure often results in reputational damage over and above the cost associated with the standalone events. This calls for management to focus on using approaches in the Basel ll accord in the treatment of capital requirement for operational risk, its classification and monitoring.
Basel II provides a range of options for determining the capital requirements of credit risk and operational risks. This allows banks and bank supervisors the opportunity to select the most appropriate option for their operations and their financial market infrastructure.
The seminar/workshop will help participant understand the basics of the Basel ll accord and the Basel directives in understanding and monitoring operational risk.
